Prorogation has a time and place, must be used wisely
2/18/2010
To the Editor: Thank you for your thoughtful editorial in the January issue of The Light concerning the prorogation of Parliament. I was so glad to read your article and have it appear in our local monthly paper. Prorogation is certainly appropriate at times, but when it is used consistently to stifle discussion and examination of important issues facing Canadians it is an abuse of power. We don’t need “wool pulled over our eyes” and I for one resent it when attempts to do so are forced upon us. Like many of my fellow citizens, I am deeply concerned about the way our democracy is evolving or not evolving and the lack of accountability at all levels of government. Editorials such as yours keep the issues before all our eyes and support efforts to develop higher standards of accountability, justice and debate among all citizens. Thank you again for your reflections and I hope you will continue to write editorials in The Light that address key issues facing our communities, province and nation.
Sincerely, Wayne Edgar, West Earltown
