TATAMAGOUCHE: Cold weather and harsh winds didn’t stop three scout troops and their leader from making a 10 kilometre trek from Bayhead to Patterson’s Wharf in support of Haitian relief efforts the morning of Saturday, Feb. 6.
When First Tatamagouche Scouts Garrette Alguire, Brian Beardsall and Caleb Pye heard about the devastating effects of the earthquake that hit Haiti in January, they felt compelled to do whatever they could to help.
“We wanted to do something that would motivate others to help as well,” said Alguire.
The boys thought of several fundraising ideas, including a bake sale and a bottle drive, but ultimately decided a walk-a-thon was their best option. Scout leader Lynn Sutherland organized the walk-a-thon and accompanied the boys on the two and a half hour hike.
“Our goal is to raise $250 each,” said Sutherland.
In order to reach their $1,000 goal, the troops are asking for pledges from friends and family. While they have received a lot of positive support so far, they aren’t stopping yet.
The troops will continue to ask the community for pledges and hope to hold another fundraiser in the near future.
To add to the spirit of giving, the head Scout group has agreed to match the amount the boys collect. All donations will be given to the Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Relief fund.
To help the First Tatamagouche Scout Troops reach their goal, contact Betty MacKinnon at 657-3300.
A tax receipt will be issued for donations of more than $10.
