On May 26, the full program of events for the 13th Annual Ceremonial Review of 596 Phoenix Squadron formally began with the introduction of the reviewing officer, Karen Casey, MLA for Colchester North, by Capt. Elsie Schofield. Commanding Officer Capt. April MacKenzie accompanied Casey along with John (JR) Flanagan, the Air Cadet League squadron director, and William Cameron chairman of the Sponsoring Committee. During the review, the cadets were engaged in conversation with the members of the reviewing party before the march past began observed by their senior officers, family and friends and members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 64. Over the past year cadets have been involved in regional drill competitions, winter survival training, Remembrance parades, a Greenwood base trip, first aid and food handling training as well as sport and marksman competitions and many more items in addition to their weekly training. This has been a significant year as it is the first time there has been a marching band within the squadron. The new band members made a splendid contribution to the evening ceremony filling the hall with rhythm and music. Capt. MacKenzie emphasized that the success of the squadron is due to her diligent team and expressed her gratitude for their help in matters large and small. She commented that local help is essential and gratefully received from the Royal Legion Branch 64, Home Hardware in Tatamagouche, Advocate Printing, Tatamagouche High School, Tim Hortons camp and Judith Hurlburt who has been of tremendous assistance with the new band, to name just a few who make the events and training possible to enable the cadets To Learn, To Serve and To Advance as per their motto. There were many awards made individually to cadets. Cpl. Sara Langille was announced as the top overall cadet with perfect attendance and great attention to detail in her uniform as well as being willing and committed to everything and often the first to volunteer. The Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence, presented for participation and commitment to all events to a person who performs as a model cadet and who enhances the lives of others thereby being a good citizen, was presented to Sgt. Daniel Walsh. After the awards a very special plane descended into the hall and, with the help of several cadets, gave the audience a graphic demonstration of the role of air traffic control. The plane had been constructed by the cadets under the watchful eye and guidance of CI Jimmy Cripps, and it looked splendid. Unfortunately the plane had tried to fly solo from the back of Jimmy’s truck while travelling to the hall so a little adjustment had been made to the paintwork! The official ceremony closed when the students were told their summer placements and presentations were made to cadets who are leaving the squadron, Warrant Officer 1st Class Karen MacKinnon and Warrant Officer 2nd Class Mike Schouten. The aims of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets are to develop in youth between the ages of 12-18 the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, to promote physical fitness, and to stimulate the interest of youth in the air activities of the Canadian Forces. All this is achieved in a challenging, yet disciplined environment. If you are interested in joining the cadets contact Capt. April MacKenzie at 485-6390 for additional information. Over the age of 18? Do not despair – the Air Cadet League of Canada needs your help.
