NCHS Students of the Month
ANDREW RAFTERS
Every once in a while a student comes along who seems mature and wise beyond his years. The May winner is one such student. Andrew Rafters appears responsible and uses good judgment in every situation. He is someone who, from grades 7-12, has been kind to others and always thoughtful and insightful in his classes. He approaches his studies with a sense of seriousness and dedication. He also stands out among his peers because of the incredible marks he earns in all of his classes. His hard work pays off for him and he always carries home an honours with distinction medal for his efforts at the end of each school year. This senior also finds time to volunteer. He’s been involved with the haunted house at the elementary school and, on occasion, helps out at the Fraser Cultural Centre and for the local river project. He sometimes donates his time at the Tatamagouche Library and is himself an avid reader. At NCHS, he is a peer tutor and gives freely of his time after school to help others with their school work. He is also an important member of the school’s math league. In the past, he has been an avid participant in the local Scout troop. This month’s winner was last year’s recipient of the Lieutenant Governor medal given to a Grade 11 student who demonstrates academic achievement and community involvement. In addition, Tucker takes a special interest in music – in particular, fiddling. He currently takes fiddling lessons and spends some of his free time practising and playing his instrument of choice.
ARRIEL TUCKER
Arriel Tucker is an effective leader and a driving force behind many events that are important to her school, her village and the world around her. She is a valued member of the girls’ leadership program, is a student council representative and a student worker for the after-school program where she organizes and supervises games and activities for elementary aged children. She also helps organize the Tatamagouche soccer club and is a junior Brownie leader. As if that weren’t enough, Tucker is on the Police Advisory Committee and volunteers at the Fall Fling, the Easter Egg Hunt held at the Tim Hortons camp and at the Firemen’s Labor Day parade and supper. She is active in Guides and is currently working on the Duke of Edinburgh award. She was also presented the Lieutenant Governor medal at a ceremony this month. When school is out, you may find this grade 11 student busy babysitting or selling “jewlz” on Main Street. And she still finds time to hold down two part-time jobs. She enjoys writing and has been fortunate to have her work published in both a magazine and a textbook. She enjoys music and is interested in learning about forensic anthropology. Tucker is currently planning and fundraising for a trip to Ecuador through the Me to We organization and hopes to fly to Ecuador this summer where she will help to build a school in a rural village.
