The school’s art teacher, Ms. Cloutier, introduced a representative named Mary Maron from Communities in Bloom, which is a national organization that has branched into Pugwash. Mary’s message, while holding a bag of garbage herself, was to remind the audience that we must be responsible for our garbage. Communities in Bloom have impacted Pugwash by beautifying the area with flowers, cleanups and keeping the area safe for our visitors and residents. There was an anti-litter campaign May 29 and a barbecue at the Co-op. Communities in Bloom also thanked Ms. Cloutier’s grade seven and eight art classes for contributing artwork that will be displayed around town so, keep your eyes out! The grade seven class have drawn images of businesses and homes on the backs of NSLC bags that will be distributed to clients at the local store. The grade eight students made posters asking us not to litter and to keep Pugwash Pristine. The principal, Mrs. Jordan, called grade ten student Ben Cottrill up to congratulate him on the honourable mention he received at the national level for his Remembrance Day poster that placed first at the Provincial level. Teacher and Student’s Council Head, Mrs. Mackenzie, called up all regional Heritage Fair recipients. She said there were in total 270 projects and they were all excellent and it was a great day spent. Awards were received by: Ben Cottrill received Best Historian Award, Megan Elliott was given the Merit Award, William Blaikie earned the Science and Technology Award, Jenna Cottrill got the McCain Literacy Award, and a very special award was received by Lauren Russell and Jacy Trenholm whose heritage project on wedding dresses through time will be advancing to the National Level competition. Two students, Melanie Greeno and John Scott, presented a slideshow of the events that took place at this year’s 30-hour famine. There were many activities, such as twister, a male fashion show, a midnight dance and much more! In total there was $1,000 raised. A teacher, Mr. Ryan, showed one of his production technology videos that showed students working on their own homemade washer toss game, and it was very entertaining and well done. The game is for sale!
